Introduction

Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation contracted Nadi to create guidelines that ensured a cohesive and diversified neighbourhood fabric for the three neighbourhoods of Bridgwater in Winnipeg, MB. The client envisioned a complete community that combined traditional architecture with forward-thinking liveability. We took inspiration from Calgary’s new urbanist style neighbourhoods: Garrison Woods and Garrison Green, and travelled with the client to these areas, developing a refined image database that reflected the vision.

Project Summary

We created the guidelines to ensure a cohesive and diversified neighbourhood fabric that provided a variety of traditionally styled homes and included a percentage of lots with visibility features, such as lower entry thresholds (no steps or ramps), generously wide main-floor hallways and accessible main-floor bathrooms. We also gave each community a central wayfinding feature: a mature aspen-oak forest, an elegant formal fountain and a central park with each connecting to well-lit, accessible pathways. We used innovative pedestrian-cyclist traffic calming nodes to mark intersections, allowing safe traffic flow between the neighbourhoods and linking to the City of Winnipeg’s Active Transportation Network.

Nadi provided urban design services such as infrastructure planning, architectural guidelines and landscape architectural detailing for the development of the Bridgwater neighbourhoods.
