The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority required a renewal of the Health Sciences Centre MS Mall, which acts as the main entrance for Winnipeg’s largest hospital. They needed a firm that could increase the space’s functionality, resolve the cold air that funnels from the entrance doors and create a unified open market atmosphere.
To create this picture, we took inspiration from outdoor markets, adding canvas canopies that would house public café seating and black street lamps to replicate areas like Old Market Square in the Exchange District. We included Tyndall stone detailing, green feature walls, panels of tall grass within the laminated glass and black metal-framed wood louvred window coverings, which complemented the client’s vision and provided privacy for the offices within. We addressed the cold air coming from the entrance by designing a generous entry vestibule that greets visitors with pick-up and drop-off seating. We developed the entryway with a two-door entry system, incorporating a revolving door and a sliding door, which would mitigate the cold air funnelling in and facilitate the unimpeded flow of traffic.
We provided the schematic design, finalized the design development and bid and tendered the construction documents. During the construction phase, we also performed contract administration.
